The old cannery is now home to a museum, restaurants, and locally owned arts and crafts shops. The Tlingit tribe has called this area home for centuries, and they love to share their native culture. While you are here, you can even take a tour aboard a traditional hand-carved Tlingit dugout canoe!
We offer the lowest rates in Hoonah! That being said, if you call and book you will save the 6% fee the booking platform we use charges. And, we do offer discounts for groups of 4 or more on some of the tours!
Do you offer any discounts or promotions?
Yes! Multiple families may join the same tour as long as adequate space is available and the maximum is not exceeded. Just let us know and we will make sure everyone is together.
Can multiple families book a tour and be together?
Please don’t worry; we’ll know if your ship is delayed. We receive a constant stream of updates on the cruise ships’ timetables. Consequently, we will automatically adjust your schedule and factor in any delays against the timing of your tour. When you arrive at the port, just check in with a Hoonah Travel Adventures representative at the Icy Strait Point Excursion Hub. (Look for them holding a Hoonah Travel Adventures sign.) If your ship doesn’t make it to port for any reason, we will refund you in full without incurring any administration fees or penalties.
What if my ship is delayed?
There are a few great reasons! As an established, local company with a Certificate of Excellence, we love nothing more than to enrich your experience while visiting the area of Icy Strait Point. Local knowledge is king, and having a fantastic team with a wealth of local expertise in our employ, gives us the confidence that we’ll leave you happy and wanting to return! We shape and time all of our tours and excursions around the cruise ships’ schedules relieving you of any stress before you dock into port. What’s more, we 100% guarantee whale sightings on every whale watching tour (from May to September). Or, in the unlikely event you don’t sight a whale, we’ll refund you $100. In fact, our captains, naturalists and guides live to love whales, so it pleases them to no end to leave you wide-eyed on whales! We know where all the wilderness hotspots are. Moreover, our small group tours are purposely smaller than those offered by the cruise ship, giving you a more intimate experience, at a better rate, while visiting Hoonah near Icy Strait Point.

How soon should I book?
If your ship is docking at the Adventure Dock, after exiting your cruise ship, disembark and proceed up the ramp to the Icy Strait Point Adventure Center. Once inside the Adventure Center, walk through the building and exit through door number 2 — this is clearly marked. Once outside of Door #2, follow the signs to the Excursions Hub where you meet your Hoonah Travel Adventures Representative. If your ship is docking at the Wilderness Dock, you will disembark and walk up to the Gondola. Board the Gondola for a 4 minute ride through the forest toward the Adventure Center. Upon disembarking the Gondola, look for, and follow the signs to the Excursions Hub where you meet your Hoonah Travel Adventures Representative.
Where do we meet you?
For guests with mobility concerns, the following information will help you decide if you will be able to join our tours. Guests must be able to climb in and out of a 15 passenger van. If on a boat tour you will have to walk approx 100 yards from the van to the boat. You will have to walk up and/or down a potentially steep ramp depending on the tide to access the floats where the boat will be. We do NOT have space to store wheelchairs or walkers on then van/bus or aboard the boat during your tour, even if they are the folding type. A CareCart is available to people who cannot make the 300 yard walk from the cruise ship dock to the excursions hub where we meet you. There is a high demand for the CareCart which often presents you with a delay to meeting at the prescribed time.

Gratuities/Tips are never expected, but our crew work hard to make sure you have a great experience and a “Thank you” tip is always appreciated!

The only thing you can count on in Hoonah, and the area near Icy Strait Point is that you can’t count on the weather. With that in mind, prepare for the worst and hope for the best! Even waking up to warm, sunny skies can turn cool and rainy. We recommend layers of clothing, which are easy to don and easy to remove. Typically a short-sleeve and long-sleeve mid layer and a waterproof jacket, long pants and sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting wet. It can get chilly and rainy in our temperate rain forest, although summertime often sees our coastal city enjoy mild temperatures.
What should we wear?
We rarely cancel on our guests as the weather is typically pretty stable. Not only that, our sturdy fleet of boats in conjunction with our experienced captains at the helm, and guides at the wheel of the vans, are more than capable of coping with the conditions. We ensure your safety aboard our boats and tour vans. In the unlikely event we do cancel the tour, we will provide you with a full refund.

Do I need a fishing license?
All fishing activities require an Alaskan fishing license. You can purchase licenses in Hoonah from our local sporting goods stores, or you can purchase directly from the State of Alaska. We highly suggest pre-purchase of your fishing license online in an effort to save time the day of the outing! To pre-purchase your fishing license visit: https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/Store/Home/Guest.
What happens to the fish we catch?
In the truest spirit of conservation, we run a catch & release operation.
What should I wear?
The weather in Hoonah is often wet (we live in a rainforest.) Bring layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, a camera and/or video camera, and comfortable, preferably water resistant or waterproof shoes. Keep food and flavored drinks packed tightly away. Water is permitted.

This whale watching tour is personalized, as it takes out a maximum of 14 guests at a time. This allows for a great crew to guest ratio, ensuring your experience is personal. The areas we search near in Hoonah near The Port of Icy Strait and Point Adolphus are known Humpback whale feeding grounds. Josh has captained in this area for many years and knows the area well! He know how to find the whales! Add in the communication he has with other captains on the other boats, and it's a perfect whale finding system! What really makes this tour unique is the Drone imagery. Drones are able to see below the water surface and broadcast live video back to the boat. View pods of orcas effortlessly gliding under the waves, on rare occasions, see humpback calfs playing with their mothers, on rare occasions, the amazing phenomenon of "bubble-net" feeding by groups of humpbacks is seen. Your personal view of the whales is not repaced with drones; just supplemented! You will experience seeing and hearing these amazing animals with your own eyes and ears, and then we take you to the next level with our displays onboard.Sales Pitch
Your Captain, Captain Josh, is a USA certified Drone pilot with a state of the art drone. Your personal views of wildlife with your own eyes, is always the primary focus, drone views just makes the experience incredible. We fly our the drone in a legal manner, a safe distance from the wildlife, in a fashion where we we can safely view them without disturbance, broadcasting the footage live while underway. The imagery the drone captures is just incredible and can not be gotten through normal photography.
Not only will our guests be thrilled by incredible sightings they will also take home an "unique" souvenir. We download our drone footage before we even make it back to the dock! FAQs
How Close will we get to the whales?
The National Marine Fisheries Service whale watching guidelines require us to maintain a 100 yard spacing from the whales when we are approaching the whales or maneuvering in the whale watching areas. Once we have stopped moving and begin to drift and enjoy the whales they frequently approach the boat at a much closer distance. It is likely that during the trip you will find yourself very close to one or more humpback whales and will get some excellent photos.
Are the whales more active in the morning or afternoon?
Humpback whales in Icy Strait have one primary focus for their time spent here – eating. There really is no period during the day during which you can predict when the whales will be more active. We really have not noticed a difference in behavior during different times of the day. Most of the time we are out on the water we observe them feeding and enjoying some exercise between meals. They feed as often as they are able and rest and play a bit between meals. We tell guests to pick the times that work best with their schedule
Do you have a bathroom on board?
Yes, we have a clean marine head on board.
What is the capacity of your boats?
This boat takes a maximum of 14 guest.
What other wildlife might I see while on the water?
Aside from humpback whales that come to feed on Icy Strait nutrient-rich waters, you might also get to feast your eyes on harbor seals, sea lions, porpoises and sea otters. Bald eagles and a myriad of birdlife soaring overhead also populate our skies so don’t forget to look up. Sometimes, brown bears can be seen on the shoreline.
Is there a chance I get sea sick?
This is a common, but not a common occurrence! Becoming seasick is always an extremely remote possibility. The waters are generally calm during the summer months and on the days when the wind and tide do make the water choppy, the motion of the boat is not of the kind that induces motion sickness. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend Dramamine or a wristband.
How much is the USB with drone video on my tour?
As the only charter boat in the Hoonah area to offer drone footage of whale sightings during your tour, this souvenir is unique and will truly enhance your experience! The cost is $25.00 and the footage will be downloaded onto a USB drive formatted to either PC or Mac.
Is there a chance the drone will not go up?
There are times, due to weather circumstances that would prevent us from putting up the drones, namely constant rain. We cannot fly these devices in full-downpours as they are not totally waterproof, but it’s a rare tour that doesn’t give us some window of opportunity to view from the drone. We estimate that on average, we are able to fly them over ninety-five percent of our tours but we can’t guarantee they will go up.

This Alaskan wilderness and bear search tour is offered on Chichagof Island, a one-of-a-kind location with the highest population of bears per square mile of any place on Earth. In the pristine wilderness of Hoonah, Alaska lies an island known for its year-round beauty, massive bear population, and rich wildlife. The vast majority of which reside in Alaskan’s pure untouched forests teeming with bears or deer depending on what you're looking for - there's plenty to see here! The brown bear reigns supreme as king but other animals like seabirds can also be spotted during your tour--it truly offers something unique from all walks of nature when it comes down how diverse nature really is at this remote destination. The Chichagof Island has the highest population of bears per square mile anywhere on Earth. This Alaskan wilderness and bear search tour is offered May through September during months with highest probability for sightings, such as late April or early May when they're coming out from hibernation mode looking to find food, while mating occurs between June into August. This time period offers for a chance to see males fight other alpha males over females who can be unreceptive at times and force the males to give chase! With years of experience, your guides will know exactly where to go for the best chance to spot a bear. In July, the salmon start their migration from the ocean up the rivers and we find the bears feeding in coastal rivers and streams. In August and September, the salmon have made it further up the rivers to shallow streams where the bears chase them. Depending on the month and the weather, the wildlife can be found in different locations throughout the island. Join us as we search for these amazing creatures! FAQs
How much moving is involved with the tour?
This is primarily a van based tour and not a “trail hiking” tour. The most moving involved will be the 5 minute trek from your ship to the Icy Strait Point Excursions Hub. Guest must be able to move up a sometimes, wet, slippery, uneven, and sometimes soft ground for approx 100 yards.
Can I bring food on this tour?
We ask that you do not bring food on this tour. A granola bar or similar item is ok if needed to maintain sugar levels.
Should I bring Binoculars?
When traveling to Alaska binoculars are always a great item to have but not essential.
Will I be able to get out of the van?
Yes. Your guide will stop at various locations looking for wildlife. You will be able to get out, stretch and take advantage of photo opportunities.
Am I guaranteed to see a bear?
No. While Chichagof Island has the largest concentration of brown bears of anywhere in the world, these animals intentionally stay away from people. Our guides spend lots of time in the Tongass and will do everything they can to find wildlife for you.

Huge numbers of humpback whales come to the area near Hoonah every summer to feed in the nutrient-rich waters of Glacier Bay and Icy Strait. The whale population begins to arrive in Hoonah in May and stays through September. Humpback whales are large baleen whales that can reach over 50 feet in length and weigh as much as 30-50 tons. They are most famous for their whale songs, thought to be used by males as a mating call. Humpbacks are amazingly active and typical whale sightings include diving, blows, and flukes (tails). Lucky whale watchers may get to see breaching or bubble-net feeding, a cooperative feeding method where a pod forms a circle and dives under the water. They then blow air to create a wall of bubbles that force krill and plankton to the surface where the whales can eat them. Observing humpbacks practice bubble-net feeding is a real treat and a truly thrilling experience. FAQs
How close will we get to the whales?
The National Marine Fisheries Service whale watching guidelines require us to maintain a 100 yard spacing from the whales when we are approaching the whales or maneuvering in the whale watching areas. Once we have stopped moving and begin to drift and enjoy the whales they frequently approach the boat at a much closer distance. It is likely that during the trip you will find yourself very close to one or more humpback whales and will get some excellent photos.
Are the whales more active in the morning or afternoon?
Humpback whales in Icy Strait have one primary focus for their time spent here – eating. There really is no period during the day during which you can predict when the whales will be more active. We really have not noticed a difference in behavior during different times of the day. Most of the time we are out on the water we observe them feeding and enjoying some exercise between meals. They feed as often as they are able and rest and play a bit between meals. We tell guests to pick the times that work best with their schedule.
Do you have a bathroom on board?
Yes, all of our boats have a clean marine head on board.
Are your boats available for Private Charters?
Absolutely. Whether whale watching is a priority of yours or not, our vessels are available for private hire. Should a private charter be of interest, Tail Chaser with up to 30 passengers, and Hoonah Bound with up 18 passengers are both available. Both are perfect for once-in-a-lifetime events with family and friends. Even getting married on the water. Contact us and we will put something custom together for you!
What is the capacity of your boats?
Hoonah Bound can accommodate up to 18 people and our larger vessel, Tail Chaser, can cater to up to 30 people. Our boats have a front and back decks. Also, all of our boats have an enclosed heated cabins with wide-viewing windows. If you have a group of 18 or more – call or email us about our group or private charter rates.
What other wildlife might I see while on the water?
Aside from humpback whales that come to feed on Icy Strait nutrient-rich waters, you might also get to feast your eyes on harbor seals, sea lions, porpoises and sea otters. Bald eagles and a myriad of birdlife soaring overhead also populate our skies so don’t forget to look up. Sometimes, brown bears can be seen on the shoreline. It’s a wildlife utopia, it really is!
Is there a chance I get sea sick?
We get this question a lot. Becoming seasick is always an extremely remote possibility. The waters are generally calm during the summer months and on the days when the wind and tide do make the water choppy, the motion of the boat is not of the kind that induces motion sickness. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend Dramamine or a wristband. In the last 10 years of operation we have 3 guest out of thousands get seasick.

On 02/03/2025 NOAA Fisheries released its 2025 regulations for halibut fishing, and there are some key changes affecting charter operations that you should be aware of: * One Retention Trip Per Day: To ensure the sustainability of the halibut population, charter operators are limited to one trip per day where halibut can be retained. (within size and bag limits, of course). * Additional Catch & Release Trips: We understand that many anglers enjoy the thrill of the fight even if they're not keeping the fish. Therefore, on days when we have a retention trip scheduled, we may also offer additional catch and release halibut fishing trips. These trips will provide all the excitement of hooking into these incredible fish, but any halibut caught must be released back into the ocean unharmed. * Tuesday: No Retention Day: Please note that Tuesday has been designated by NOAA Fisheries as a no retention day for halibut fishing. Do I need a Fishing License?
All fishing activities require an Alaskan fishing license. You can purchase licenses in Hoonah from our local sporting goods stores, or you can purchase directly from the State of Alaska. We highly suggest pre-purchase of your fishing license online in an effort to save time the day of the outing! To pre-purchase your fishing license visit: https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/Store/Home/Guest
If for some reason I can’t get my license ahead of time can I purchase and pay for my license on the boat with a credit card?
No. We unfortunately do not have the ability to accept credit cards on board the boat.
What happens with the fish we catch?
Any fish you catch, within the limits, are yours to keep if you’d like. We work with a local fish processor to have your catch processed and shipped to your home. If you would like to pay the processor to process and ship, there are easy order form cards for you to fill out on board so that you can keep track of your fish and ensure it is processed to your specifications.
What kind of boat will I be on?
The boat is a custom aluminum catamaran made by Munson Co Inc and fully-equipped with all available safety gear. The boat has a heated cabin with comfortable seating for all

Are the Kayaks Singles or Doubles?
Our kayaks are all doubles.
Do we need Kayaking experience?
No, this tour is geared toward beginners. It's more for sightseeing, relaxing, and enjoying the beauty of the area.
Will I see any wildlife on this tour?
There are always possibilities to see a variety of wildlife such as whales, eagles, orcas if we are lucky, and many more.
Can I bring a backpack?
Yes, you can bring a backpack. The kayaks have storage holds, but if you prefer, we do have a storage place onshore to leave backpacks.
Are there any physical requirements for this tour?
The physical limitations are minimal. It's a fairly easy paddle and if at any point you can no longer continue, we can take you back in our follow/safety boat.
What type of clothing should I wear?
It really depends on the weather. It could be 70 degrees with sunshine and blue sky's or it could be raining. Check the weather the day before you tour. To be safe, dress in layers that are easy to put on and take off and bring a light rain coat.
Is there an age or weight restriction?
The age restriction is 12 years of age (Depending on capability) but we are flexible if the parent is willing to paddle for the child if need be. The height restriction is 6"6 and the weight restriction is between 270 to 300 depending on build. Beyond this height and weight, it's harder to fit into the kayak.
Will I get Wet?
You could get wet if it rains and possibly from paddle strokes. We do our best and provide spray skirts to help with keeping your legs dry inside the kayak and ponchos for rainy days. We recommended that you bring a thin rain layer just in case.

What do people say about Icy Straits Shore Excursion?
We had an AMAZING time hanging out with Captain Billy and his daughter. They were both knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful during our excursion. The weather was cold but their warm boat, The Silver Spoon, made for a cozy time on the water and was perfect for cruising around. We were able to go out on the front of the boat area for photos when we slowed down and they kept the inside nice and warm from us in between photo stops. Billy was funny and told many stories of his time growing up in the area. We enjoyed the tour from them very much. Beyond their excellent service towards us, the wildlife we encountered was phenomenal! We saw a pod of Orcas, sea lions, a bear and her cubs, and 3 humpback whales! One of the humpback whales put on an AMAZING show for us, dancing and jumping all around for 30+ minutes--I couldn't believe the photos I was able to capture! Excellent experience all the way around.

I was impressed that when our ship changed the time in port, Hoonah Travel Adventures noticed before we were notified by the cruise line! We had a wonderful time with captain Denise, who is native to the area. We had thought the boat was only going to be for our group (9 people) but were rather surprised when there were about 30 people to share the space. We also were under the impression there were going to be snacks and drinks to purchase on the way back, but there was not - so everyone in my group was getting rather hungry and grumpy.

Captain Denise was great - very informative about growing up in Hoonah, telling stories and sharing some of her culture with us. She was also very knowledgeable about the wildlife we saw. We were able to see 2 bears on a shore on one of the islands and then saw a few whales (not up close). Denise was in communication with other boats, as they would tell each other where to go to see the whales. It was evident she was trying her best to get us the best whale watching experience. I would definitely recommend this experience, but it may be slightly overpriced on Viator.

INCREDIBLE experience!! For starters, I booked directly and the team was so accommodating, I originally had 27 then dropped to 5, and times where changing & the team was so helpful & accommodating. Also got us a great deal. Easy and clear instructions and the staff were the best!! Our captain shared great stories & history for the travel time in between getting from harbor out to where the whales are. There team is well connected & was communicating the entire time with other local boats to know exactly where everything was. Also something very unique was dropping the mic in the water to hear the whales live. I’ve been on others where they play pre-recorded sounds, but never live! And until you experience that, there are no words to describe it! We got an amazing experience not only of whales so close to us & a breach, but the amazing good fortune of them turning direction to swim right at us & right next to our boat!! Then as we were leaving to head back they got word of orcas, and detoured to see them which was extremely rare & so very special! There was also seals, sea lions, otters, bald eagles & deer we spotted, and I guess can be pretty common to see bears along shore as well. So over all a truly one of kind experience very much worth doing!! In addition I did want to also note the co-pilot/captain/second hand(sorry forgot the official term). She was so passionate about wild life & loved how she didn’t have a script, or notes she’d referenced, but just spoke from knowledge, experience, place of passion and love for the animals.

One of the best excursions we had on our Alaskan Adventure. Captain Denise was amazing. On our whale watching tour we spotted: eagles, black tail deer, a brown bear, sea otters, orcas, humpback, and grey whales! The naturalist highlighted the each species and their migration habits. The captain shared the history and stories of the Inuit people. This is a must do excursion when visiting Hoonah-Icy Straight!

Definitely saw whales, approximately 11 and grateful for no rain so we could step outside on the boat. Natuarlist was good, informative. Though from earlier reviews had expected boat captain to share funny stories, which didn't happen. Actual boat time was 2.5 hours, not 3, of which half was going out looking for whales and half heading back. But heading back was so fast made for an uncomfortable bumpy ride. Minor point but they mention they offer drinks and snacks but only offered a simple biscuit cookie.

We were on a search for bears and we were able to see a female bear up close by our van, a male bear, and a mama bear with her two cubs at Long Island. Cora was very knowledgeable about the area and shared her hunting experience. The guides all communicated with each other when they knew where the bears were hanging out. We also saw a Sitka black tail deer and some bald eagles near their nests. It was the best tour we’ve been on in Alaska.

I know that having a great whale watching experience (we saw bubble feeding!) is a lot of luck, but this company really went out of their way to keep up with what other captains were seeing and made sure they got us to the good stuff. We bypassed a single whale to make better time getting to a group that was bubble feeding!! It was great. Captain Denise Gray was terrifice, and told funny stories all along the way. She had a young naturalist onboard with her (Annaliese) who was helpful and friendly too. All in all, it was a great experience, and one I would gladly repeat. (Aside from the nine whale group we saw, we also saw sea otter, bald eagles, stellar sea lions and even a mink as we sailed through the dock area).

Amazing we got to see loads of whales. 🐳 Crewe were experts providing lots of information on the whales and finding them. We then went on a bear hunt. Very comfortable boat and friendly guides made this trip perfect for our family. Our guide, Denise, told us many stories about the area and her communities’ history. We saw lots of wildlife including orcas, humpbacks, and eagles. The interior of the boat was cozy and warm and we didn’t have to travel far to find the whales. We highly recommend!

Incredible experience with extremely knowledgeable staff and captain. One of the main highlights of our Alaska trip that I will remember for the rest of my life. Icy Strait is in my opinion the perfect place for this kind of activity. I can’t recommend this tour enough.

Nice, brand new boat with warm interior for early season. Small trip in van from excursion site in port to boat. We lucked out and saw a couple young calves breaching in the area which was amazing. Got very close to the Wales as well. Jordan and his wife do a nice job.

Captain Denise provided great local knowledge and history of the region. Her knowledge and experience provided us with sights of Bear, whales, sea otters, and sea lions. Great hospitality by her and Cayden (deck hand). The cooperation of the local people is very helpful for the tourists having a great adventure.

We did the wilderness tour and brown bear search 26th May with Cora as our guide. She was great- as a local she shared her knowledge about the wildlife and plants and we got to see two different bears! Would highly recommend 😊As soon as we got off our ship onto the gondola we seen deer and eagles. Whales were swimming in the bay and seen from shore and the ship

We sailed with Denise for our whale watching tour. She was a great Captain. She was a native who grew up in Hoonah and was very knowledgable about the town. She shared stories from her tribe and from her life in Hoonah. It was great to hear how the various Captains share sightings of both whales and wildlife in the area the help insure their guests have a great experience on the water. The entire trip from booking to sailing was seamless. They communicated step by step instructions for getting from the cruise ship to the pick up location along with their transportation from the pick up location to the dock where the boat was located. We were also able to walk around town before heading back to the ship and could take the shuttle back to the ship when we were ready to go. I would highly recommend Hoonah Travel Adventures!

I did a whale watching excursion with Hoonah Travel Adventures while on a Holland America cruise that stopped in Icy Strait Point. The trip was incredible!! We left Hoonah at 3 pm in a great small boat. Over the course of few hours of the excursion, we saw a TON of humpback whales -- breaching, bubble-net feeding at least 5 times and lots of other whale activity. We were all amazed! Captain Rob and Analise the naturalist both did a terrific job running the trip. We were extremely lucky to see so many whales but regardless, I highly recommend this company and this tour if you are in Hoonah!!

We spent the morning with Cora! She provided a lot of history about the area from a personal perspective. We saw 2 bears and were able to observe them for a while. I’d highly recommend this tour and Cora was fantastic!

Our driver was very nice and knowledgeable. But very disappointing trip. We saw no bears on the tour. I realize they cannot control this but I would love to see what percentage of time they actually see bears. It was an expensive trip to ride on a gravel road for 3 hours. It was beautiful scenery.

Best excursion ever!! We saw so many whales it was surreal!! This was 1 of 3 whale watching tours I did while cruising Alaska and by far the best! Firstly, Captain Paul and Patrick were exceptional. They were entertaining, knowledgeable and it was obvious how much respect they have for the wildlife. Patrick made sure everyone had a chance to enjoy the experience, take photos and spend a good amount of time watching the whales. At no point did he rush us. He kept his eyes on the water so he could quickly tell us where to look. The boat is the PERFECT size as it was a small group making the whole experience feel personalised with enough outdoor space to enjoy the magic. Patrick communicated with other boats on his radio so he and Paul knew exactly where to take us for all the wildlife action. We saw numerous humpbacks, orcas (life long wish fulfilled!) seals hunting and otters and all while we basked in the sun. Thank you Hoonah Travels for an amazing experience I’m sure others like me will treasure forever. Highly recommended!

I am giving this a 5-star review, though sadly our whale excursion was cancelled that morning due to heavy fog in Hoonah. However, we did not receive the message before we headed off the ship, and were still greeted by a lovely woman named Angie from the company, in the meeting spot off our ship. She saw our sadness about the trip being cancelled and offered to drive us into the downtown of Hoonah (tiny tiny spot) and gave us informative tips and history along the short drive. She also offered to secure a ride back to Icy Strait for us also, all for free, which was so kind. PS- Hoonah and Icy Strait Point are near each other but are not the same thing. Icy Strait is a business spot/shopping area created by and for cruise lines, where as Hoonah is the nearby town. The Hoonah locals were quick to tell us the difference. While a very tiny town, our few hours in Hoonah were informative and a real glimpse into remote Alaska living.

We had a great time hunting for bears. Just be aware you are in a van the entire time so get a good spot by a window and keep your camera ready! Our guide was fantastic and knew all the other guides (and their families). We looked for signs of bears, then waited and crept along roads and marshes. It paid off because we finally found 2 big bears trotting along, what a thrill!

Captain Paul and Patrick were great! We saw multiple humpbacks diving and bubble feeding - you could hear the whales bellowing! We also saw seals and a few sea otters. Sun cam out and made it great for viewing! Definitely worth it for the memories!

We arranged 2 tours with Hoonah, Wilderness & Bear Search & 2nd one was the Whale Watching. Our 3 hour Bear search was a very small group riding in a van through Icy Strait Point passing rivers and streams looking for wildlife. The only thing we saw on this tour was 1 bear crossing the road from a distance. Our guide pointed out a couple of salmon in the stream but were camouflaged and very difficult to spot. It was disappointing not to see much, but there aren't any guarantees either. Our Whale watching experience was better. We saw 1 bald eagle and a pod of 5 whales shooting their water up and then jumping up just a bit out of the water all together. This was a 3 hour tour as well. We didn't see any sea lions or anything else during this tour. Our guide was great talking about whales & other sea creatures and had great stories to tell throughout our ride. The sun came out for awhile so that was appreciated.

On a cruise but booked independently. Pick up was easy, found our tour without difficulty. On the boat with ~20-30 people, Paul & Patrick were very informative, took us to great viewing locations. SO many whales- got great video. Paul gave info on local wildlife and culture, he was a wealth of info. Would do this again without hesitation.

If you skip this whale watching trip, you're missing out. Captain Denise was amazing and knew exactly where to find the good stuff. We saw orcas, humpbacks, seals, and a brown bear sow with her cub. Captain Denise shared stories of her heritage and vast knowledge of the area. This was the highlight of our Alaskan cruise itinerary. They made sure we returned on plenty of time to make it back to the cruise ship.

We had Captain Ed Lauryn and Savannah. Very comfortable seats. Warm inside the boat. Capt opened the pilot house and talked to anyone who wanted to see his perspective and his knowledge. The girls very very knowledgable of the area, and the wildlife. Outside of the small boat up to Hubbard glacier this was the group favorite. At one point we had 9 whales around us, several sea lions, seals, sea otters and various other wildlife.

We saw several seabirds and ocean otters! Also saw a mother humpback and her baby! One of the whales came partially out of the water, and another, further away, was doing this repetitive tail slap. Definitely one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Wish we could have stayed out longer! Captain Paul and crew member Patrick were both very knowledgeable and taught us so many things!

4 of us took this tour, the Premier Whale Watch, while in Hoonah on June 3 while visiting on a Celebrity Cruise. Captain Denise is an experienced sailor, guide and a native to the Hoonah area. She knew just where to take us to see a large and amazing pod of humpbacks, telling us tribal stories all along the way. There were only 16 of us on board on a single level vessel so there were easy lines of sight for everyone - we even saw a full barrel roll breech! She lowered microphones into the water so we could hear the whales talking/singing while diving below. This was an incredible day and exceeded expectations.

Cruise ships dock away from town and developed a nice tourist area. Took a free, short gondola ride over to other side of Icy Strait village and enjoyed shopping in the old cannery as well as beautiful views before getting shuttle to Hoonah. Shuttle is behind the cannery area! Although these whale tours may indicate 3 or 4 hours long, important to ask them how much time is actually spent whale watching! Almost 50 minutes spent to get to boat and whale watching location. One hour whale watching. Captain very knowledgeable about the area, fishing and Alaskan lifestyle with lots of stories. Free water and little snack served.

They use fairly large (40-150 person) boats for whale watching, with enclosed space to get us to the sites where whales were active, and open spaces when we arrived there. Crew did a nice job and we saw a good number of whales while respecting their space.

We enjoyed seeing humpback whales and a glimpse of sea lions and otters. No orcas, porpoise or onshore critters sited on our 10:45 cruise. Unfortunately the boat was completely full so at times it was hard to get a view on deck. Enjoyed the commentary about marine mammals and sea creatures by Captain Paul.

Wow! What an experience! The weather was very rainy with strong winds, but we had the time of our lives. Our captain, Denise was great! She had amazing stories and photos to share with us, which would have made the trip great by itself , but she navigated us to a location where we got to see about 7 or 8 whales breaching within feet of the boat. Unbelievable! This is a must do experience! Would not recommend for those who are prone to seasickness- the waters were very rough the entire time. On the negative side - they dump You off in the company gift shop at the end and hold you hostage for 30 minutes before your shuttle returns to port. Very annoying on the end of a great excursion.

This outfit pick us up from the transportation area at Icy Strait Point and took us to Hoonah. We arrived and walked down a rather steep ramp as it was low tide. Handicap folks beware!!! We boarded our beautiful craft that had comfortable seating, was enclosed, and it was easy to hear the Capt, Capt Paul talk about the area. We had a delightful day watching humpbacks lunge feed. It was beautiful and we stayed with the whales for about 30-40 minutes. We then went and watch two bears near the shore line eating scallops. We also enjoyed seeing sea lions and listening to them. It was just a terrific adventure filled with great whale activity, wonderful information, and beautiful weather. After we left the boat we walked over to the local gift shop to catch our ride back to Icy Strait Point. You got a discount if you went whale watching which was nice. I recommend this company for the ease of getting there and the great experience we had!!

Stunning boat trip with hugely interesting commentary from the skipper.You have to sit inside the boat, no getting out on the journey to the whale feeding grounds as the boat goes too fast. A bit cramped when we all went out to watch the large number of Humpbacks feeding in the bay (after about a 20 min trip out).Superb views though a bit of jostling to get a good photo.As ever, just your luck where you are standing when a whale surfaces.That said two surfaced really close to our boat, a major bonus though all down to luck. My best photos were videos of the whales as trying to get a good single non action shot is really difficult. Sensational experience all round and well worth the money.

Our bear search excursion was really, really good! Our guide was super knowledgeable, as well as entertaining. The scenery is STUNNING! And it was a bonus that we saw a mama and 3 cubs at the very end of our experience. I felt safe the whole time but I also knew that I was definitely in grizzly bear country!!

We had an amazing experience on the Hoonah whale watching cruise. The boat was safe and it wasn’t such a large group which was nice because we had a great view of the whales. We saw sooo many whales it was incredible. Our guide Paul is a local and what a great guide he was! His knowledge of the whales and stories of the area really made our trip memorable. Es war außerordentlich gut. Denise, unsere Kapitänin, fuhr mit uns zunächst in eine Bucht. Dort sahen wir bereits Buckelwale und sogar einen Braunbären an der Küste. Allein das hätte mir schon gereicht. Wir waren den Walen so nah. Es ist ein kleines Boot für ca. 16 Personen. Deshalb konnten wir auch etwas näher, aber der Abstand war immernoch ausreichend und respektvoll den Tieren gegenüber. Später noch raus gefahren und Orcas, Seelöwen und Seeotter gesehen. Unglaublich, was wir gesehen haben. Es war sehr bewegend, auch Denise's Geschichten. Die Erklärungen zu den Tieren waren auch sehr hilfreich und wissenswert. Danke für diesen extrem guten Ausflug. Wir müssen diese besonderen Erlebnisse erst mal verarbeiten, es war toll und bewegend.

This excursion FAR exceeded our expectations! The boat captain was great and taught us a lot about the area as well as the whales. He was very knowledgeable and made it really interesting. This was one of the best excursions I’ve ever been on! Our captain Billy was knowledgeable and very interesting. He was persistent in making sure that we were able to see whales,Otters, sea lions, bald eagles & even a bear!He provided binoculars if we wanted them. This was a terrific whale, watching tour with plenty of sightseeing. We saw bears off in the distance, a floating otter, killer whales that we watched for a good 20 minutes and giant humpback whales. We researched whale watching in Alaska at the ports our cruise ship would stop. We did not want one of the tour bus experiences with a large group. Hoonah was rated better than Juneau for whale sighting, so we looked at Hoonah Travel Adventures. WOW!! This experience was awesome. Smaller boat, but plenty of space to take photos. Smaller group, so you weren't crawling over each other. Paul, our captain, was so knowledgeable and had incredible stories to tell of his own experiences, and his kids growing up in the area. We were able to see humpback whales bubble feeding and then opportunistically, 3 orcas as well (2 male, 1 female). Also saw an otter from afar. I appreciate the smaller boat, though only 6 people outside up front at a time. Still better than the bigger boats with everyone crowded imo. Captain Denise also sent shared photos afterwards for anyone interested.

We did this tour with Braidon as our guide. He had very expansive knowledge of the floors and fauna of the area ands as good sense of humour. He gave a great insight to the local Hoonah community. We were able to watch five bears in the river hunting for salmon which was amazing to see. We would highly recommend this tour.

Went with my husband and 2 adult children. We had an amazing time and experience! Our guide Paul was an Alaska native and extremely knowledgeable and informative during the cruise. This is our second time with Hoonah Adventures whale watching tour. And our second time with captain Denise. We were blessed with viewing so many humpbacks and orcas, as well as seals, otters, and eagles. I had an amazing experience with HTA! Their gift shop had a good selection of items, with better prices than the Point shops. We left on time and had a great captain/guide (Paul) and deckhand (Patrick). Paul was full of information he shared about the wildlife and town of Hoonah. Within the first 15 minutes of leaving the harbor we saw a whale breach fairly close to our boat. Throughout the tour we saw several whales breach, groups of whales bubble feeding, and pectoral fin slapping. The views were amazing! We also saw a bear on the shoreline and sea lions. I would recommend to anyone looking to enjoy wildlife and very scenic views!
